Coaching Supervision

The EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) defines supervision as a formal process of professional support and learning that provides a safe space for reflective dialogue with a trained supervisor. It enables practitioners to reflect on their work, develop their competence, and maintain the quality and integrity of their practice.

EMCC highlights three core functions of supervision:

  • formative (supporting professional development)
  • normative (ensuring ethical standards and professional responsibility)
  • restorative (supporting the practitioner’s well-being)

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) views coaching supervision as a collaborative reflective process that supports coaches in continually developing their practice through dialogue, critical reflection, and increased self-awareness. It provides a confidential space in which coaches can explore their work, deepen their professional maturity, strengthen ethical practice, and enhance the quality of service they offer their clients.

Drawing on both the EMCC and ICF approaches, I see coaching supervision as a reflective partnership that supports you in exploring your practice, deepening your self-awareness, strengthening your competence, and enhancing your capacity to serve your clients effectively.

Unlike Mentor Coaching, which focuses primarily on developing coaching competence in alignment with the ICF Core Competencies, coaching supervision takes a broader and more holistic perspective. It explores not only what you do as a coach, but also who you are and how you show up in your coaching relationships.

Supervision provides a confidential and supportive space to reflect on your successes, challenges, questions, and learning edges. It allows you to step back and view your practice from a wider perspective, creating the opportunity to recognise patterns, explore new possibilities, and continue evolving as a professional coach.

Supervision supports coaches to:

  • Maintain high professional and ethical standards in their practice.
  • Develop their coaching capability, confidence, and professional identity.
  • Sustain their well-being and resilience.
  • Strengthen reflective practice and enhance the quality of service they provide to their clients.

Supervision is not limited to reflecting on specific client cases. It also provides a space to:

  • Explore ethical dilemmas and professional challenges.
  • Reflect on your strengths and identify opportunities for continued growth and development.
  • Consider the relational and systemic dynamics that influence your coaching relationships.
  • Step back and gain perspective by viewing your practice “from the balcony,” recognising patterns, broadening your awareness, and discovering new possibilities.

Every supervision conversation begins with what is most relevant and meaningful to you. Together, we will create a safe, confidential, and thought-provoking space where you can reflect on your coaching practice, explore different perspectives, receive both support and constructive challenge, and deepen your awareness of yourself, your clients, and the coaching relationship.

By taking time to reflect before each session, you help ensure that our work together has a clear purpose, is connected to your current learning edge, and supports both your ongoing professional development and the quality of service you provide to your clients.

Together, we will create the conditions for ongoing reflection, continuous learning, and professional growth, supporting you in becoming not only a more skilful coach, but also a more self-aware, resilient, and authentic practitioner.
